Cooking gammon is often touted as one of the most intricate and potentially challenging processes for any would-be pork cooker. Due to gammon’s unique salty and layered texture; cooking the meat precisely and perfectly requires a lot of attention and expertise.
When considering cooking gammon, you might first seek to identify which specific cut of gammon you are cooking. There are many different types and cuts of gammon. These range from simple unsmoked and smoked versions to more complex types of roasted joints.
The only difference in the cooking methods is the difference between cooking a gammon joint and gammon steak. While we might supply more gammon joints as this is the more specific type of pork found at wholesale butchers in Staffordshire such as ours; we thought it best to break how to cook a gammon steak as this arguably the more popular type of wholesale meat.
As previously alluded to; a gammon steak is arguably the most popular type of gammon purchased in the UK. Additionally, cooking a gammon steak is probably the most well known process of gammon cooking. Requiring a similar technique to other different types of steak such as beef steaks; the surprisingly simple process is rather simple. However, what is surprising is how many chiefs get it wrong.
In preparation to cook your gammon steak, you will want to pepper both sides of the wholesale meat. Then take a frying pan; apply a bit of cooking oil or fry light on the pan, then set the temperature of the pan to a medium to high setting.
Now that the pan is ready, you will want to throw the pork onto the pan. Cook each side for roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute to seal the meat. After this, turn the temperature down to a medium to low setting.
You should then continue to turn the gammon steak occasionally and cook for an additional 10 minutes ensuring the steak is cooked through.
Once the gammon steak is cooked, you can season once again with pepper if you wish. In turns of toppings; most meat enthusiasts cite topping the cooked quality meat with a fried egg as the perfect finishing touch.
Many gammon lovers also detail a baked potato, rice or even chips as complimenting gammon perfectly as a side dish.
