How To Tell The Difference Between Good and Bad Meat?

At HP Westwood, we take great pride in the fact that our delicious top quality wholesale meat is of exceptionally high quality. When you buy from a well established wholesale butchers such as ourselves, you expect certain recognised universal standards. Afterall, that is why you buy from a wholesale butcher in the first place.

While some indicators of whether meat is bad or good might seem obvious, other signs are not so clear. Some signs may be visible aesthetically well others might require a feel of the texture or further examination.

Exactly what constitutes good or bad meat can seem slightly complicated to some. This is mainly because when people usually say that a meat is bad; they simply refer to meat which has gone bad or gone off. But meat can also just be of generally poor quality even if the produce has not fully gone bad.

This is why we have decided to detail ways in which you can tell that meat is bad and not of great quality.

Funky Smell

One of the most obvious tell-tale signs that a meat has gone off or if the meat is bad is by a potentially funky smell. If meat, or most other food related products for that matter, produce a strange or unpleasant smell, then you will not want to eat.

And right you should. While a slightly estranged smell does not necessarily mean the meat has gone off, it is a clear indication that the meat is of less quality.

Discolouring

Similar to how you can smell if meat has gone off, you should be able to tell your meat has gone off just by looking at it. If meat goes off, or is just generally of poor quality, then the meat might change colour slightly.

Depending on the meat in question, will depend what colour the meat might change too. Generally speaking, you should look out for the meat turning a darker shade than the original colour.

Sticky and Slimy

While you might be able to tell if your wholesale meat is sticky or slimy just by looking at it, sometimes a more thorough inspection is required. Meat being stick and/or slimy is not only a unpleasant experience, but it is a sure-fire way to tell that the meat is bad.
